Education is an important component of the Art Gallery of Calgary’s mandate, and Painting Under Pressure: A Look at Graffiti is intended as an opportunity for visitors to learn about hip-hop graffiti, explore graffiti subculture and the stereotypes around it, and make up their own minds about its role in contemporary art.

The Art Gallery of Calgary is dedicated to helping visitors understand and appreciate contemporary art. Painting Under Pressure: A Look at Graffiti gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about hip-hop graffiti and to explore why art historians, galleries and people from outside the graffiti community are studying it as a form of contemporary art. Why is this exhibition at the Art Gallery of Calgary? By inviting eight Canadian graffiti writers to exhibit their work inside the gallery, the AGC is offering Calgarians an opportunity to examine and discuss graffiti in an atmosphere removed from legal issues. The exhibition offers a neutral ground for the recognition and exploration of seldom-discussed aspects of hip-hop graffiti such as aesthetics, history, motivation and technique.
