In the 50-year history of Haynes, the best-selling car manual of all time was for the Ford Cortina Mk IV. With the BMW 3-Series selling in such large numbers, maybe this latest manual will claim pole position. A staggering 167,300 examples of this BMW model have been sold in the UK, despite them being neither cheap to buy nor inexpensive to run – if you insist on main dealer servicing. They are, however, reliable machines – coming first in the Fleet News 881,000 vehicle reliability survey in 2008. Despite most models having high specifications, many routine servicing jobs on the BMW 3-Series are within the capabilities of a competent DIY motorist and, under the bonnet, items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible. This means that running costs can be significantly reduced and it is often more convenient to, say, change brake pads at home on a Saturday morning than book the car into a garage. This latest Haynes manual covers Saloon (E90) and Touring (E91) models with 4- and 6-cylinder engines (petrol 2-litre, 2.5-litre and 3-litre and diesel 2-litre and 3-litre). That is models designated 318i, 320i, 325i and 330i with petrol engines and 318d, 320d, 325d and 330d (diesel engines). It does not cover the facelifted versions introduced from September 2008.
