Conventional treatments such aschemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy have hadvariable impacts, although chemotherapy is useful inpalliation and can improve both survival and quality oflife. There is hope for new antimetabolite agents. Therole of radical surgery is yet to be evaluated in a largetrial. New radiotherapeutic techniques to improve localcontrol are promising. Multimodality treatmentsappear to be the most successful for management ofpotentially resectable disease. It is likely that biologicalmarkers will improve accuracy in staging and progno-sis. With new treatments based on better understand-ing of the biology of the disease, there is cautious opti-mism for the future for patients with malignant pleuralmesothelioma.
