MALIGNANT PLEURAL mesothelioma (MPM) is a locally invasive and rapidly fatal malignancy linked to asbestos exposure. Surgical resection is possible in a minority of patients, and fewer than 15% of these patients live beyond 5 years. 1-3 For those who are not treated with curative resection, the median survival duration when receiving supportive care alone has been reported as 6 months, 4,5 whereas the median survival time of 337 patients in 11 multicenter chemotherapy trials was 7 months. 6 Treatment with radiation therapy has been equally disappointing, inpart because of difﬁculties in irradiating disease while avoiding toxicity to normal lung, cardiac, and spinal cord tissues.
