Cause The cause of Parkinson's disease is unknown. The links between the disease and factors such as genetics, aging, toxins in the environment, and free radicals are all under investigation. Though these studies are beginning to provide some answers, the exact cause of the disease remains unknown. A recent study of Parkinson's disease in twins suggests that genetics may not play much of a role in most cases of Parkinson's disease. 4 Only a small percentage of people with Parkinson's disease have a parent or sibling with the disease; however, abnormal genes do seem to be a significant factor in a few families where early-onset Parkinson's disease is common. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease are caused by low levels of dopamine, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) involved in controlling movement. The shortage of this brain chemical occurswhen nerve cells in a part of the brain (substantia nigra) that produces dopamine fail and deteriorate. The exact cause of this deterioration is not known.
