Vertigo is an illusion of movement, either of the person's body or of the environment. Words commonly used to describe the sensation include spinning, tilting, and moving sideways. Any patient with a final diagnosis in the vertigo category should have some abnormal sensation of movement documented. The many potential causes of vertigo are best distinguished by sub-classifying vertigo according the duration of symptoms, and whether the vertigo is brought on by changes in position or occurs spontaneously. Association of vertigo with hearing loss or tinnitus also provides important diagnostic information. Excellent quality care would therefore include documentation of these factors in the patient chart (Indicator 1) (Ruckenstein, 1995).
