Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., of Irvine, California, recently posted a product notice for the batteries in its portable computers that were manufactured between March and May 2006. The batteries simply stop working, i.e., they stop accepting a charge, and they no longer supply power to the computer. The affected batteries were included in some, but not all, of Toshiba’s notebook computers manufactured between March and May 2006. Toshiba’s notebooks are not subject to the same problem that resulted in the recalls issued by Dell and Apple. However, Sony requested that Toshiba participate in its global battery replacement program, and Toshiba decided to voluntarily participate in the program.
