More than 5,000 different land vehicles have been used by the United States military ranging from lightweight fold-up bicycles that can be dropped by parachute to monster bridge launching vehicles that can carry and lay down a 1 00-foot-long bridge capable of supporting an 80-ton tank. Vehicles range from fun (the Kawasaki KL-250 recon motorcycle) to bizarre (a gigantic rolling rubber bladder filled with fuel) to truly heroic (a mobile ICBM launcher 105 feet long and 14 feet wide weighing 122 tons). Military vehicles are generally auctioned off to companies and civilians at the end of their rated service life (I 2 to 20 years) and sell for a fraction of the price of a comparable civilian vehicle.
