In the history of publishing it would be hard to find a book, published by a relatively small pressand with almost no public notice, containing ideasthat have had a greater and more long-lasting impacton public policy than John F. Kennedy's 1958treatise, A Nation of Immigrants. The ideasexpressed in A Nation of Immigrants (thoughKennedy was certainly not the only one expressingthem) ultimately became the basis for theimmigration reforms of 1965 which, to this day,stand as the foundation of US im-migration policy. As has become the custom of aspiring presi- dential candidates, Senator Kennedy in 1958 wasseeking to get his public policy ideas and visions inprint and in the public record. In the Anti-Defamation League, Kennedy found a willing andpowerful outlet for his views on immigration policy;in the issue of immigration reform, Kennedy and theADL—a division of B'nai Brith, the most prominentJewish organization in the United States—found acommonality of interests.
