For example, in one ongoing project both a parent and another adult childcare supervisor (e.g., teacher) are providing personality data for the children. Using the SNAP paradigm (Hughes et al., 2002), children are placed in a competitive interpersonal situation requiring emotional regulation. In this paradigm, dyads of children compete in a rigged card game in which each player has a winning streak and a losing streak. Children’s reactions to winning and losing are being videotaped for later evaluation of emotional expression by trained observational coders who are blind to the Agreeableness and Effortful Control status of the children. Agreeableness and situational factors such as the order of winning/losing will also be used as predictors of children’s emotional responding. We expected that children high in Agreeableness (and Effortful Control) would exhibit less negative affect and more positive/neutral affect when losing than their peers.
