n previous research, (Hart, Atkins, & Fegley, 2003) we demonstrated that predictors of stress within the family (poverty status, family size, parental presence, home environment) were predictive of change from the resilient personality type to the under-controlled type. Specifically, children whose families were characterized by many of these predictors were more likely to change from the resilient type to the under-controlled type than children whose families had few of these characteristics. In this study, we examined the effects of neighborhood poverty on personality change. If stress can lead to undesirable change in personality, and high poverty neighborhoods are stressful environments (e.g., Evans, 2004), then children living in such neighborhoods ought to be more likely to change from resilient to the under-controlled or over-controlled types than children living in affluent neighborhoods.
