Pre-employment testing has become very popular throughout the United States with numerous companies. There are many different types of testing, such as drug and alcohol testing, personality testing, along with testing for ability to perform the task at hand. Most of these tests, however, do not have anything to do with the job itself, but deal with whether or not the applicant can be trusted. The main issue with testing does not lie with the company’s intent, but with the result. The different versions of pre-employment testing have a great number of benefits as well as a plethora of limitations and regulations. These tests check for drugs and alcohol, personality flaws, as well as the integrity of the future employees. There are various ways of conducting searches for drugs and alcohol, including urine tests, examinations of hair follicles, and also by using oral fluids. These tests prove useful not only before employment, but also randomly throughout the worker’s career. When testing for honesty and personality flaws, the applicants are asked to answer questions usually over the phone or by using a computer. These questions include things such as whether or not the employee feels the need to talk to management if they see a fellow employee stealing, or if they would ever raise a fist to another employee. Some of the answers may seem obvious, but not everyone picks up on the correct response.
