Abstract This initiative will use large-scale numerical simulations to solve QCD, the fun-damental theory governing strong interactions, to understand the structure andinteractions of hadrons. Jeﬀerson Lab and MIT will develop, build, and oper-ate cost-optimized QCD Alpha Cluster computers using commodity components.These 256-processor and 64-processor clusters will provide a total peak perfor-mance exceeding 480 Gigaﬂops at a cost below $10 per sustained Megaﬂops. Anational collaboration of theorists will undertake coherent, coordinated calcula-tions of nucleon structure, hadron spectroscopy, hadron-hadron interactions, andfundamental aspects of QCD essential for understanding the next generation ofexperiments at the nation’s premier experimental nuclear physics facilities.
