ARRY POTTER BOOKS BURNED A local Alamogordo group of about 400 people received national media coverage on December 30 by burning Harry Potter books. Christ Community Church Pastor Jack Brock, who condemned the popular series as "evil," led several hundred churchgoers at the Sunday night bonfire as books from the Harry Potter series and other materials were thrown into the flames. "Harry Potter is nothing but witchcraft," Pastor Brock was reported to say by the Alamogordo Daily News for December 23. "It's evil hidden behind the face of an innocent boy with little glasses." As a follow up to Brock's Christmas sermon entitled "The Baby Jesus or Harry Potter?" the Pastor publicly invited his 1,500-member congregation to attend the "holy bonfire.” Participation was supposed to give congregation members an opportunity to dispose of personal items, which they believe have been a spiritual hindrance in their religious lives.
