Dealing With SQL In FileMaker FileMaker can communicate with external data stores in two different ways – either via the built-in ODBC import and Execute SQL features of FileMaker Pro 5.5 – or via a FileMaker SQL Plug-In (sold separately by a 3 rd party vendor).

FileMaker version 4.1 and higher can import data (static SQL query) using ODBC while FileMaker Pro 5.5 can import data via ODBC with a dynamically generated SQL query or a static SQL query. In addition, FileMaker Pro 5.5 allows the execution of any valid SQL command via the “Execute SQL” ScriptMaker step. In order to use either of these features the client machine requires an ODBC driver that is client platform-specific.
