The basic Graphics Suite Package has seen a few changes. The highlight, of course, is CorelDRAW, the vector editing package. They have retained CorelDREAM 3D which is basically Ray Dream Designer 4.0 with some slight modifications. They also still provide Corel OCR-TRACE, a texture creation module, a good capture module, 1000 fonts, 40,000 clip art images, 1000 photos, a barcode maker and 450 templates including a selection from Paper Direct. New to version 8 are 450 pieces of clipart for the web including animated GIFs. Also new with this version is inclusion of Bitstream’s Font Navigator, which looks and feels very much like the old Ares Font Manager which was bought and mangled by Adobe to create ATM Deluxe. Like Font Manager, this program gives you drag and drop font packages, samples and copying and moving. Though it duplicates most of ATM deluxe features, it does them better, easier and faster. Dropped from the package was CorelDepth, an instant extrude utility which is mostly duplicated by features already in DRAW. They continue to try to improve their clipart-multimedia-drawing gallery and tracking program and future articles may deal with this more in depth. Next to DRAW, the most important part of the package is Corel PhotoPaint, a photo-editing and painting program that truly gives PhotoShop a run for its money with some advantages over and disadvantages to the venerable Adobe program. Corel has made many improvements to its already superb paint program, especially in the realm of web compatibility. This too, may be covered in more depth later.
