Of all the operating systems that run on the Intel architecture, none is morecomfortable with networking at themost fundamental level than Linuxitself. From day one, Linux wasdesigned and implemented as a multi-user operating system, and isgeared up for connecting to othermachines on either a constant orintermittent basis. Networking is builtinto the heart of Linux rather than beinga hasty bolt-on as it is with mostoperating systems.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that connecting a Linux box to an existingnetwork is as easy as falling off a log,but it’s not rocket science, either – at least not with some distributions,anyway. This month, we’re covering the basics of networking with Linux,and there are two potential approachesto the topic. First, you’re already inpossession of networking hardware and have some understanding of basic networking terminology from the Windows world, but you’re new to Linux.
