1. INTRODUCTION The Gang-of-Four (GoF) design patterns [9] offer flexible solutions to common software development problems. Each pattern is comprised of a number of parts, including purpose/intent, applicability, solution structure, and sample implementations. A number of GoF patterns involve crosscutting structures in the relationship between roles in the pattern and classes in each instance of the pattern [6]. In the Observer pattern, an operation that changes any Subject must trigger notifications of its Observers – in other words the act of notification crosscuts one or more operations in each Subject in the pattern.
