Content Summary :

The eXtensible MarkupLanguage (XML) is quickly becoming popular for ex-changing and representing data over the Internet. An important question is whatis the best way of storing XML documents since the performance of the underly-ing storage representation has a significant impact on query processing efficiency.Recently, several projects have proposed alternative strategies for storing XMLdata in a database system. There are basically three alternatives for storingXML data: in semi-structured databases , in object-oriented databases, and inrelational systems. This paper presents XEDY (Xml Enabled Database SYstem), a visual XML data management system built on topof a commercial relationaldatabase management system. Since an XML document is an example of semistructured data, an obvious question is – why not use semistructured database to store this data in lieu ofrelational DBMS. While this approach will clearly work, we transform the XMLdata to relational tuples for the following reasons: First, though there has beenincreasing research in XML data management, development of a full-fledgedcommercial XML data management system for managing very large volumes ofXML data is still in its infancy. On the other hand, twenty years of work in-vested in relational database technology has made it commercially very success-ful and ensured simplicity, stability and expressiveness. As relational databasesare prevalent in most commercial companies, no additional costs are incurred.Furthermore, RDBMSs are capable of storing and processing large volumes ofdata (upto terabytes) efficiently.
