For the people of our era, change requires rapid adaptation. At the turn of the century, hysteriaand obsessive neurosis were 'accepted social disorders' but by the seventies this picture hadshifted towards narcissistic personality disorders, which calls the attention to changes inpersonality structure parallel to changes in social structure. The twentieth-century consumer-society narcissist suffers from anxiety, depression, and vague feelings of longing and inneremptiness. For them freedom is elusive: in fact they are surrounded by institutionaldependency and, moreover, they are unable to maintain their self-respect without continualreinforcement from their environment. At the same time, the relationships of this self-satisfied, self-glorifying personality are characterised by a fear of emotional dependency,which in turn leads to their own manipulation and exploitation of others, which then results ina superficiality in relationships.
