File Summary

This document is intended as technical overview to cover steps involved in hardening a Windows 2003 Server. Many of the steps are described in more detail in the Windows 2003 Server Security Guide from Microsoft. This document, or even the Microsoft document, are not a substitute for system administration training and must not be confused with a system administration “How To.” While many of the steps described are technical in nature secure system administration is 80% process and only 20% technical solutions. It is always important to remember that the best technical measures can be easily disrupted by bad practices or user error for example, surfing the web as system administrator or failure to patch third party applications. Even more important it must be understood that the steps described in this presentation are an intended for a basic file and print server. This document is not appropriate for web, application, or sensitive data servers. In These cases far more steps and other risk mitigation strategies are required!
